In short. Any inverter air conditioner with a heating mode can heat, but down to different outdoor temperatures. Standard models work down to −7…−15 °C; for heating in frost you need series the manufacturer rates down to −25 or −30 °C. What does “heats down to −25 °C” mean?
It is the lowest outdoor temperature at which the manufacturer allows heating mode. Below it the unit may shut down to protect the compressor. The figure is in the model’s spec sheet, and we show it on every product page.
At −25 °C the unit still heats, but less than above zero: the colder it is outside, the less heat it gives and the more electricity it uses. That is why for heating you choose a model with headroom in both frost rating and capacity.
Which air conditioners heat at −25 and −30 °C?
Here are 12,000 BTU models for rooms up to 35 m², the most common size for a bedroom or living room. The table only lists models whose heating limit is confirmed by the manufacturer or its official representative.

A 13,000 lei model and a 30,000 lei model both heat down to −30 °C. What is the difference?
On paper, smaller than the price gap:
- Heat output. For the same size the spread is small: 3.6–4.2 kW. Gree Amber gives the most.
- Noise and running cost. Noise level and energy class are on each product page. For the models in the table they are close.
- Housing, finish, features. This is where the expensive series differ most. Wi-Fi is built into MDV Infini Nordic, Gree Cosmo, Nordic Evo and Cooper&Hunter VIP, but not Gree Amber. None of this changes how low the unit keeps working.
- Our warranty is the same for all: 2 years on the equipment and 2 years on installation, extended to 5 years on installation with annual cleaning.
If the air conditioner will be your main heating, look at frost rating and capacity first, and at design second.
What capacity do you need for heating?
For summer cooling the rule of thumb is about 1 kW of cooling per 10 m². For heating it is better to go one size up, especially if:
- the flat is on a corner or on the top floor;
- windows are large or walls are poorly insulated;
- the air conditioner will be the only source of heat.

Why does the unit sometimes stop blowing warm air in winter?
That is defrosting, and it is normal. In frost the outdoor unit gets covered with ice, and every now and then the air conditioner switches over for a few minutes to melt it. During this time no warm air comes from the indoor unit, and you may see steam outside. Then heating resumes by itself.
For defrosting to work properly, water must drain from the outdoor unit. If the base pan and drain are clogged or frozen, ice builds up at the bottom of the unit. This is checked during winter preparation; what you can do yourself is in “Getting your air conditioner ready for winter”.
Does it pay to heat a flat with an air conditioner?
An air conditioner does not turn electricity into heat like a convector or an oil radiator; it moves heat from outside into the home. So for the same electricity it gives several times more heat than a regular heater. The harder the frost, the smaller the gain, but even at −15…−20 °C the models in the tables heat more cheaply than a convector. The honest conclusion: a heating air conditioner pays for itself faster the more you use it.
Choosing a heating air conditioner: a short checklist
- Frost rating. For heating, a model rated to −25 °C or −30 °C. If it only tops up heat in spring and autumn, −15 °C is enough.
- Capacity. By room size, plus one size up if it is the main heat source.
- Inverter. All models in the tables are inverters: they hold temperature smoothly and use less power than on/off units.
- Installation. The outdoor unit is placed so that icicles and snow from the roof do not fall on it, and defrost water drains away instead of freezing on a walkway.
- Maintenance. Clean once a year: a dirty unit heats worse. It also extends the installation warranty.
